1 Year With Muffy And Pearl

April 7, 2021

This time last year wasn’t great. Right before the reality of the pandemic fully set in we faced sheer and utter devastation losing our sweet Pierre. Life at that point seemed beyond uncertain and sad, quite literally forcing my husband and I to have no other choice but to begrudgingly move forward in with some semblance of hope.

And fortunately that hope manifested in the most beautiful of ways, a young mamma and her pup, Muffy and Pearl.

Adopting them was a huge undertaking, but one we like many folks stuck at home were eager to take on knowing full well the lifelong benefits of having fur babies join the family.

They rocked our world, two young pups bringing all their buoyant energy and mounds of white fluff into our newly finished home. After a scary battle with Parvo and some adjustments to our formerly slow lifestyle with a sleepy French bulldog, we managed to come out the other end, fully settling into a new routine with the ladies, as we like to call them.

To celebrate our anniversary we decided on an afternoon excursion at the beach, a little adventure to commemorate the year.

And what a year it’s been.

Since their arrival early last April the girls have really made their home with us. We’ve learned that despite their agility and record setting hop heights they are quite lazy and spend most of the day sleeping; Pearl strictly under sunlit spots, Muffy under cool or breezy temps.

Like Pierre, they’re both quite the scavengers, however looking for slightly different things. Pearl is fairly practical with her delectable gourmet finds on the street like french fries, cookies, pizza slices, chicken wings and even a throughly cooked, still warm and crispy strip of bacon. I have to give her credit as she had to find a way to feed herself and Muffy while in utero during her time living on the streets.

Muffy, however, is always on the hunt for fun, which she can easily find by making a new friend or finding a wad of perviously chewed gum.

To say these girls have brought joy into our life this past year would be an understatement, as no matter what setbacks life had to throw my way, I could always count on the ladies, to bring me back to the present with their warm, cheerful little bodies, reminding me of everything innocent and good in the world.

I use the word innocent with a heavy grain of salt, however, after all Pearl has been known to chew on some drywall here and there and apparently Muffy’s the next Michelangelo given her precocious attempts at sculpting our Calcutta marble fireplace into a priceless work of art.

But our lazy morning snuggles each day most certainly have made up for the hits to our home.

They really are the sweetest little girls I’ve ever known! Pearl takes cuddling to a whole new level, insisting to sleep between us at night, completely submerged under the duvet. Muffy insists on frequent rubs on her baby skin belly which is always warm and honestly an experience most would fail to forget.

Even more cute than that, they have a very entertaining mother and child relationship, where Pearl appears to have received the shorter end of the stick, getting more than her fair share of unsolicited play time with Muffy, who loves to wake her up mid nap with a love bite on the face and ride her like a donkey as she’s now outgrown her mama by an inch or two.

I can’t wait for them to meet our baby on the way and see our human child grow up with two eager big sisters that will hopefully teach him the invaluable nurturing skills learned when bringing furry friends in to our life.

Walking up each morning to their snuggly, sleepy little faces is a good way to start the day. After a few licks of encouragement I can be sure the worries of yesterday were merely passing thoughts, prompting me into the now, surrounded by support and possibility during these overly uncertain times.

And as I move into this next chapter of burgeoning parenthood, blissfully unaware of what the future has in store for me, I am more and more certain that while life has no guarantees, the unconditional love from my girls appears to be the great exception.
