A Love Letter to Verona

July 19, 2025

Dear Verona,

At last, we meet again, this time with a husband and kid! When you last saw me I was 20, fashion-obsessed and ready to save the world and spoke Italia more fluently. Now at 35 I call Los Angeles home, am in private practice and still spend all my money on clothes and traveling.

Because of you I took a chance and moved many miles away from home after college and have established Los Angeles as my adult home. Because of you I cherish traveling and have faced many fears head on, there’s a big beautiful world out there and so many more experiences worth having. Because of you I see the world for what it truly is; expansive, complicated, eternally beautiful.

Because I you I am so grateful for this life of mine.

And I still have that tattoo to prove it, the one I got in one of your shops, the one that says sarò sempre grata (which translates to: I will be forever grateful), I think I finally got the message and can remove it now!

LESSONS I LEARNED FROM VERONA

No. 1

Never stop searching, for beauty near and far, enriching people and experiences are always out there and you’re worth finding them! Travel is one solid way to do this, but so is meeting new people, joining new communities, reading and learning about different perspectives outside your comfort zone.

No. 2

Embrace la dolce far niente, the art of doing nothing-productivity isn’t everything, savor life and enjoy it.

Especially in America, we over prioritize work and the accumulation as a result of everything we do. As hard as this practice is for me I really try to embrace it in small ways in my day to day life.

No. 3

Cherish your relationships and your time with friends, family and people you meet briefly, it’s the key to happiness in life. I was so fortunate to live with Sonia our freshmen year and while abroad, she’s still one of my closest friends!

No. 4

Always buy the coat, I’m still so happy I did. It was expensive for me at the time but I trusted my gut, this one would be a keeper and it’s still a staple classic in my closet and full of such great memories!

No. 5

Be grateful for what you do have, whether it’s tattooed on your wrist or not. Life is always going to be filled with hardships and you have every right to feel everything you feel, but when you’re able to, try to find the things that keep you grounded, intuitive and make you feel good about yourself. Life is all about being connected to your purpose, making meaning of your life and gratitude is a way to discover and appreciate just that.

My dearest Verona, grazie mile per tutti!

Con affetto,

Monica
