CHIC PLACES: MOONSCAPES AT SARAKINIKO BEACH, MILOS GREECE

I have very little words… and many great facial expressions, remembering this special very place. In the simplest of terms, this place is what I imagine Mars to look like, as it was truly out of this world. Perhaps that’s why the sun bleached, volcanic features are often referred to as moonscapes; a term that literally just means its characteristic of the moon. Outside of a Dr. Seuss story, I have not been privy to too many places as unique as this one yet, therefore I was beyond excited our journey through the Aegean even allowed for my highly anticipated visit to Milos, the beautiful island in which this magical place exists. I had heard lots of wonderful things already in doing research for our honeymoon, however, I will admit that finding this beach put the already overly praised destination even higher on my list and coming here in person clearly did not disappoint. Even my husband, who is often hard to impress was smitten once we rolled up and saw some of nature’s most beautiful creations.
We arrived about an hour before sunset, just in time for the most perfect light (not strategic on my part at all – KIDDING). There were still a good amount of people there, particularly lots of like-minded, Instagram photo ready kids like myself. But I would say the closer to sunset, the better views of everything, and I can only imagine how absolutely perfect a sunrise trip would have been. The timing was great, aside from the long and uncertain wait for a taxi cab as they are increasingly harder to come by the farther from a city center you are. In fact, the same driver who dropped us off ended up being our ticket back so my advice to you is to either rent a car or make friends with taxi cab drivers! Ours actually gave us a number for his friend to take us back to the harbor after dinner.

Once we managed to pick our jaws back up, we settled into a small rocky perch near a shallow bay and enjoyed the last bits of golden sun. Aside from a small shallow beach that is quite rocky, there really isn’t much beach space and most certainly no finely grated sand to sit in so I recommend bringing something more plush than just a regular towel if you plan to hang out for the afternoon. A lot of visitors, specifically children, wore water shoes. If you’re too style conscious for that like me, then at least wear something durable enough for a bit of climbing, as that appeared to be half the fun! I actually, for the record, went barefoot up this little cliff, unsurprisingly given that I will do almost anything for the sake of good photography.

Fortunately, I was not after a jump shot, which was a good thing given how shallow the water seemed to be. I didn’t do a full swim that evening, however, it would have been a great place to do just that given how calm the water was. I think in the back of my mind I was also hesitant to put my pretty puff sleeves into the water, despite the fact that I was wearing a real swimsuit, completely capable of being submersed into water.

We stayed for a while and caught the last rays before they settled down into the edge of the sea. I just can’t stress to you how pretty a scene it was; honestly the pictures don’t do the place justice. I found just the perfect place to stand in the sun, feeling like an absolute goddess of some new found land in a galaxy far far away. I even made Arthur stand in the sun-kissed spot, so he could remember just how cool it felt to be this far from home.

Before the last ray hit the water, we had thankfully hopped into our taxi cab to dinner. It was a short little adventure here, but quite a memorable one. I will also be checking off that trip to the moon from my lifelong to-do list, which benefits us all really.
