CHIC SLEEP: MY COLLEGE BEDROOM

Talk about #TBT. No Animal House posters here! Despite my very typical college experience (dorm rooms, big ten football, time spent abroad, sorority affiliations, themed parties, etc.) I always seemed to have a very developed sense of style for myself, with which I expressed mostly via fashion, but also for my second (and perhaps even greater) love for interiors and decorating. So when I came across these old photos from my very first apartment (senior year, post sorority house) I wasn’t at all surprised at how little my tastes have changed over the last four years. In fact, I still have quite a few of the same things in my current bedroom!  When I began collecting items the summer before, I had just returned back from a semester abroad in Italy. Living and traveling in Europe encouraged lots of bold and frivolous moves on my part; for example indulging in every opportunity to eat delicious pasta, pizza and gelato, taking big fashion risks (lace tights, fur and hot pink pumps, oh my) and embodying a general feeling of freedom and inspiration from all of the rich and well preserved history of European countries. So when looking for items I just bought things I really loved individually and hoped they would come together somehow. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised by the result! Enjoy!

My absolute favorite part of my bedroom was that corner rattan chair! It was even more soft and comfortable then it looks and I loved sitting in the light and reading or doing work on my laptop. Full disclosure, the combination of coziness and assigned readings prompted frequent naps, but regardless, it was a pure utility to me!

I wanted to have a collage of art on my wall and in hindsight probably could have done a better job hanging the frames cohesively. Many of the images were from traveling, but I wish I had done more frames with pictures of family and friends! Like everything else I purchased the frames individually and just hoped for the best. I think choosing one or two colors/textures to focus on would be a good start for anyone collaging on walls, but it’s also a good idea to have at least a few unexpected frames too, for example a bamboo texture or mirror/glass, in the mix.

Despite all the flack I got from my friends about this bed tray, then and even now, I still firmly believe it’s an essential element. Where else can you put your phone, magazines, and breakfast in an organized manner? After all, my nightstand is stacked with coffee table books and art! Don’t forget a coaster for coffee/tea/water in bed!

I really wish I had hung something above the bed here like a large art print or mirror. Its tough to see so much open wall space go unused after moving to a big city like Los Angeles and having had to trade amenities like space, for a good location and natural light!
