While researching for the COVERGIRL series, I came across this old Vanity Fair cover and became overwhelmed by the nostalgia of my tween years…For most girls, and certainly myself included, those years meant lots of change, self-discovery, and uncertainty/hope about becoming a teenager and eventually a woman…
Cheesy, but quite true, these girls were my idols….I grew up loving the Olsen twins, their was something so special about them and almost all of my early fashion sense came from the example they set…most notably, their 90s inspired attire in Passport to Paris…

The spaghetti strap tops, choker necklaces, black platform wedges, and knee length, straight lined, floral skirts were all the rage back then to me, I remember mocking every look in my closet after their wardrobe then…and I still am…Olsen’s are forever chic…

Second to the unbeatable Olsens, came Hilary Duff, most notably in her iconic tween Lizzie Mcguire character; she inspired me to be myself and use fashion as a form of expression, I am grateful for her, since that expression has made me the person I am today!

I remember how much I loved this scene (depicted above) in A Walk to Remember, starring Mandy Moore as the shy, bookworm who all the sudden reveals her grace, beauty and talent when she sings to the high school bad boy onstage, and shortly after, helps him change his troubled ways….how romantic. Her curly brown waves became my favorite hairstyle, I remember waking up extra early in middle school, just to curl every inch of hair on my head…

Amanda Bynes was someone I always admired as a tween, because she was so funny! She was the youngest comic ever to have her own successful skit show in Hollywood; The Amanda Show was truly one of a kind…and taught me that girls could and should be smart and funny; which has stayed with me ever since…

I loved watching Alexis Bledel play intelligent and deserving Rory Gilmore in the hit drama Gilmore Girls; the show was not a domestic display of cookie cutter mother-daughter relationships, but instead a heartwarming testament to how special a bond between a mother and her daughter can be…it made me appreciate my mother so much more, an incredibly important lesson to learn as a tween…

Believe it or not, Lindsey Lohan made an impact on me, but it wasn’t until her role as lost-girl-from Africa meets suburban-highschool-girl clique-hierarchy in the classic film Mean Girls, then she really caught my attention…I was a sophomore in high school and related pretty well with this hilarious, drama filled, girl banter comedy…the style was so right on, my own high school girl clique completely embraced the polos, cardigans, wordy tank tops, and plaid and denim mini skirt trends…it was so fetch…
Despite where these girls may be now, they will always be a big and important part of my generation…
